When you Serve Your Family, You Serve the Lord

I’m going to be totally honest with you guys….I hate house chores!  I hate doing the dishes and I equally despise the loads of laundry that always seem to pile up.  After a full work day, the last thing I want to do is fold laundry and prepare a meal.  I desperately want to curl up on the couch with a blanket and snuggle my little man; that is my ideal evening.  That’s not often how it goes, and I know that I have responsibilities as a mother and wife.

My husband and I have made do with a tiny efficiency washer and dryer for the past 3 years.  A load of laundry would take about 4 hours to complete, which meant laundry was never finished.  Recently the dryer finally decided it was done for, and winter really isn’t a great time for air drying clothing.  As my mother-in-law has now relocated back to the Midwest, she kindly gifted us her full size washer and dryer.  Hallelujah!!!!  I was so excited to get it into our laundry room and finally be able to keep up with the laundry!  That’s not exactly how it went though.  Without our knowledge, my kind mother-in-law gifted us a GAS dryer.  We do have gas in that room; however, we do not currently have a dryer hookup.  I was so discouraged by the whole situation!

Genesis 18:19 ESV

“For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.”

I spent the next week washing about 15 loads of laundry and then hanging each and every piece on our shower curtain.  It completely consumed every morning and evening.  Every morning I walked into the bathroom with clothes hanging on the shower curtain, it made me negative about the whole thing.  On my last load of laundry, when I was hanging my little one’s clothes in his closet, I just felt the Holy Spirit wash over me.  He reminded me that all this laundry is a labor of love.  While it is not the most enjoyable service, it is a gift to my family.  We have these grand ideas about how we should be serving the Lord, but truthfully as wives or mothers, sometimes our greatest servitude to the Lord is to serve our families.  Every load of laundry, cooked meal, and dish washed is a chance to share the Lord’s love with your family.  Every time your little one smashes two legs into one clean pant leg or your husband pulls on his favorite sweater,  the aroma of Christ lingers in the air.

Our Father, Our Rescuer

Bible Journaling Page

I just wanted to share a verse with you today about the power of our Father over our fear!

Isaiah 35:3-4 (ESV)

Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.

Say to those who have an anxious heart, “Be strong; fear not!  Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God.  He will come and save you.”

Marriage is Hard, But Love is Easy

I shared a little yesterday on Instagram about the theme I’m carrying over into the New Year, and that was focusing on my marriage. My Bibles from last year speak volumes about the many prayers that went into their pages praying for my husband and our marriage. I know that theme will move on with me into the coming year. I want to focus on showing my marriage more love, and that means patience, forgiveness, and understanding.

What are some themes or prayers that you guys are carrying into your New Year?
