An Open Heart

Proverbs Bible Journaling Illustrated Faith Asher Smiles

It’s amazing how much Bible Journaling has changed my life.  I don’t always have a season of life that I am able to dip in everyday, but the days that I do, set a tone for my life.  Each time I sit down at my tiny area to pour into His word, I feel like a weight has been lifted off my life; I feel His love and grace lifting the anvil off my chest from the worries of this world.

It used to be enough for me to just create, but no other project feels as connected, as powerful.  I had the pleasure of sharing my love for Bible journaling at a small coffee shop with a group of vivacious women who had a passion for life.  I suppose you could say that they brought it out in me; They brought out the passion I have for the Lord, and I had to share it!

I find myself these days in circumstances with strangers, family, and friends explaining to them why Bible journaling is so profound.  Isn’t that amazing?!  It’s my special way of sneaking in the Gospel, and it removes every doubt and fear I have about doing so!  I truly believe that Bible journaling can be done by ANYONE!  There is no right or wrong way to do it, and I guarantee it will bring you back to the Word every time.  No matter the conflict or emotion, I’m drawn back to my desk with each day to worship, to create, to hear Him speak to me.

In honor of saying that Bible journaling can be done by anyone, I wanted to share a simple entry using only 6 products that I did in less than 20 minutes.  I read my scripture, prayed over them, and chose some products in my stash to correlate.

Proverbs 23:19 (ESV)

19 Hear, my son, and be wise,
and direct your heart in the way.

Proverbs 23:26 (ESV)

26 My son, give me your heart,
and let your eyes observe my ways.

I’ve linked the items I used (or similar) for the 6 products I used to create this page.

I actually had these clear stickers already, but I lucked into another set at Hobby Lobby for nearly nothing.  They are still currently at Hobby Lobby for $1.43!!!!

I began by outlining the two verses on the page that I wanted to focus on.  I then rubbed on 3 colors with the dabber bottles, then finger painted the white, adding dots to the white painted areas.  I smoothed on the large sticker from the corner of the Shimelle Stickers, a couple navy stars, and also cut a couple pieces of tape stickers from the same set for the top of my page.  I then cut my title from Elaine Davis’ Home Sweet Home  Alphas she provided at a recent workshop she taught! Next I placed some hexies and enamel hearts around the page.  I then stamped on my date and added my journaling.

An Open Heart Before Detailing

This would have been a perfectly beautiful page, but I believe we can take our art to the next level with just a few more steps!  Some of the best scrapbookers/artists know these tips and tricks, and so should you!

In the creative world, I’ve learned that unlike many areas of life, here “More is More.”

So to finish off the page I added a few gold foil stars from the Amy Tangerine Set and an ampersand.  I then used a couple number stickers from Illustrated Faith to reflect which verses I highlighted.  Also from Illustrated Faith, I added enamel hearts and mini hexies! Last but certainly not least, I added in a little stitching on the letters and the My Heart is Open sticker, and then I roughed up the edges of the alphas.  These small additions really appeal to the eye and add that extra level of interest.

  1. This is beautiful & so lovely that you shared your journaling resources. I’m starting out, using craft items, pencils etc I already have. It definitely brings me closer to God.

That is what I started with as well, but considering I’d been a scrapbooker/mixed media lover for what seemed like my entire life, I already had an arsenal to start with. You really don’t need much. You can make some pretty amazing things with a pen and a couple colored pencils! I’m so glad that it has brought you closer to the Lord as well!

This so beautiful. I can’t bring myself to journal in any of my many Bibles. I fear my journaling won’t be as pretty as the ones I see. For now, I make the pretty in my Bible Study Journal. One day…I’ll take the plunge.

Well, I’m sure your journal is gorgeous, and you should absolutely take the plunge! I’ve been Bible journaling for about 3 1/2 years, and I will attest to how powerful it can be! I used it as a reward to barrel through my entire Bible more times now than in my entire life! I know it is easy to get caught up in what is pretty, and I’m certainly guilty myself; however, the truth is that pretty and perfect don’t matter! It simply is just you, the Lord, and some supplies that make you smile to effectively engrave His words on your heart! Regardless what you create, it will be a beautiful reflection of your time spent with Him!!!
